Lunar Calendar System
Purnimanta vs Amanta
Purnimanta: Month ends on Purnima (full moon), used in North India
Amanta: Month ends on Amavasya (new moon), used in South India
Our calendar follows the North Indian Purnimanta system.
Tithi System
Lunar Days (तिथि)
A tithi is a lunar day, approximately 1/30th of a lunar month.
- Shukla Paksha: Waxing moon (1-15 tithis)
- Krishna Paksha: Waning moon (1-15 tithis)
- Special Tithis: Ekadashi (11th), Purnima (15th), Amavasya (30th)
Nakshatra System
Lunar Mansions (नक्षत्र)
27 nakshatras divide the zodiac, each associated with specific qualities.
Key Nakshatras: Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Pushya, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati
Seasonal Cycles
